How Vinyl Records Are Manufactured
The vinyl manufacturing process involves several stages:
- Lacquer cutting — A metal lacquer disc is cut with a lathe from the master audio file. This is the master that all pressed copies derive from.
- Electroplating — The lacquer is electroplated to create a metal "father," which is used to stamp "mother" and "stamper" copies.
- Pressing — PVC pellets are heated and pressed between two stampers under high pressure to create each record.
- Quality control — Each pressing is checked for defects, surface noise, and play quality.
- Packaging — Records are inserted into inner sleeves, then outer jackets with artwork.
Traditional vs. Print-on-Demand Vinyl
Traditional vinyl pressing requires a minimum order of 100–300 units, costs $800–$2,500 for a run, and takes 6–16 weeks for delivery. This model works for artists with proven demand but is a barrier for emerging independents.
Print-on-demand (POD) vinyl allows artists to press individual records at a time — no minimum quantity, no upfront inventory investment. POD vinyl costs more per unit ($15–$25 manufacturing cost vs. $5–$8 traditional), but the economics work for direct-to-fan sales at $30–$40 retail.
Vinyl Formats
- 12" LP (33⅓ rpm) — Standard album format. ~22 minutes per side maximum for optimal audio quality. The premium format for full-length releases.
- 10" LP — Mid-format, often used for EPs. Uncommon but collectible.
- 7" single (45 rpm) — Classic singles format. 2–3 songs per side. Used for collector singles and promotional releases.
- 12" single (45 rpm) — Extended single format. Used in dance/electronic music for club DJ use.
