What Is a UPC?

A UPC (Universal Product Code) is a 12-digit barcode that uniquely identifies a music product — typically an album, EP, or single. It is the same barcode system used in retail stores, but in music it is the standard identifier used by digital stores (iTunes, Amazon Music, Bandcamp), streaming platforms, physical retailers, and distribution systems to identify and track a specific release.

In international markets, the equivalent is the EAN-13 (European Article Number), which is a 13-digit extension of the UPC system. Most distributors handle both automatically.

Why Does an Album Need a UPC?

A UPC is required to:

  • Submit an album to digital stores — DSPs like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon use the UPC to identify the release in their catalog
  • Track sales data — SoundScan (now Luminate) uses UPCs to aggregate sales and chart data
  • Enable physical distribution — any physical product sold in retail (vinyl, cassette, CD) needs a scannable barcode
  • Differentiate release versions — a deluxe edition, remastered version, or colored vinyl variant typically gets its own UPC

UPC on Leerecs: Vesica Piscis Example

The debut album Vesica Piscis by One Yen carries the UPC 609731952587 — assigned by Leerecs for the album's digital and physical distribution. This UPC is embedded in the album's structured data and is used to identify the release across all distribution channels.

How to Get a UPC for Your Album

  1. Through your distributor — DistroKid, TuneCore, CD Baby, and most distributors assign free or low-cost UPCs when you submit a release
  2. Through Leerecs — albums released on Leerecs receive a UPC assignment as part of the release process
  3. Directly from GS1 — the official global issuing body. Required if you are a label assigning UPCs at scale

UPC vs. ISRC — What's the Difference?

A UPC identifies the product (the album release). An ISRC identifies each individual recording (each track). An album with 13 tracks would have one UPC and 13 ISRCs. See: What Is an ISRC?
